Sharing some interesting facts about the temple here.
1. The Sabarimala Temple, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, is not only one of India's most famous religious tourist destinations, but also one of its most visited temples.
2. Lakhs of people visit the temple every year. It is the second largest shrine in the Pathanamthitta District's 18 hills of the Western Ghat ranges.
3. Prior to their pilgrimage to the famous Hindu shrine of Lord Ayyappa, all devotees are expected to observe a strict 41-day fast. Vratham is the name given to this fasting ritual.
4. Pilgrims perform an important ritual known as Neyyabhishekam, which entails pouring sacred ghee on the idol of Lord Ayyappa. The ritual represents the union of the soul with the divine. The ghee is carried by devotees in handwoven cotton bags called Pallikettu or Irumudi.
5. The prasadam served inside the temple is also a Kerala delicacy. When the ritual of offering prasadam in front of Lord Ayyappa is completed, the remaining food is distributed to Kerala's food courts and local vendors.
